The Reading Clinic of Central Indiana
Advocacy
Often families, educators, schools, and the greater community find themselves faced with the challenge of advocating for the needs of individuals with dyslexia or indicators of dyslexia. Most often these challenges stem from a lack of awareness of the instructional considerations individuals with dyslexia need to develop literacy skills and engage in learning across content areas. We provide a range of services to help ensure that individuals with dyslexia, or other literacy learning differences, have the support they need to be successful.
Dyslexia Awareness training is targeted towards educators, parents, policy-makers, educational organizations, and community organizations. In this training we will breakdown the definition of dyslexia and share data on the prevalence of dyslexia, review key characteristics of indicators of dyslexia across different stages of development, and address common misconceptions. Background on the neurobiological aspects of dyslexia and how they impact language acquisition (in print and oral form) is also covered in this training. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their awareness of the challenges individuals with dyslexia experience through a series of brief simulation exercises. Case Conference Committee support is also available to families as they progress through different stages of the process. Whether you are at the beginning of the process in trying to interpret screening data and unsure if a formal evaluation is needed, or if you are further along in the process and are unsure if your child’s needs are being captured in an IEP, we are here to help.
