Service Description
Part 1: Building Your Scientifically-Based Literacy Block Course Description This one-day session examines research on the essential components of effective literacy instruction to build a language arts block. Participants will examine reading science frameworks and research on instructional design to plan word recognition, language comprehension, and written expression instruction. A broad overview of the essential components of word recognition and language comprehension instruction is addressed in this session. Participants will learn about the importance of strong phonemic awareness and letter ID skills in providing a solid foundation for explicit phonics instruction. They will also examine the role of oral language in preparing students for comprehension tasks. Within this session, participants will examine the importance of a strong MTSS framework for anchoring the instruction, assessment, and planning cycle essential for building an effective proactive and preventative literacy framework. Course Objectives: • Summarize reading science frameworks and the importance of aligning instruction and assessment tools with these frameworks. • Describe the essential components for building word recognition and language comprehension proficiency.
